If you get an error message in Zoom like the one below, it may be related to the network connection, network firewall settings, or web security gateway settings. The application remains in “Connecting” mode “Network error, please try again” If you’ve timed out due to “Unable to connect to the service.

Zoom is a tool that brings people together and one of the most popular remote work and remote learning tools in the world.

The bigger the Zoom meeting, the more data it uses. For every hour of a Zoom group call, you use between 810 MB and 2.4 GB, or somewhere between 13.5 MB and 40 MB per minute. You’ll need an internet connection of at least between 225 kbps and 670 kbps dedicated to the Zoom call.

From time to time, Zoom might display various error codes on the screen indicating your connection is not stable. And if your Zoom connection is unstable, you’ll experience video or audio buffering issues, and frequent disconnects.

  • Zoom is an online audio and web conferencing platform. People use it to make phone calls or to participate in video conference meetings. It was founded in 2011 by Eric Yuan, a former Cisco executive. Cisco offered the WebEx web conferencing platform, which remains a competitor in the conferencing space today.
  • First, Zoom is a big target given the sudden surge in use since coronavirus has had us all working from home. But it’s also to do with users sharing their Zoom meetings on social media sites such.

Fix Zoom Error: Unstable Internet Connection

→ Quick Fix: This error normally appears when you’re in the middle of a video conference. Obviously, you don’t have much time to tweak your settings or look for the culprit. As a quick workaround, if you are using your camera, try turning it off.

In this manner, you can free up precious bandwidth which should preserve the audio and screen sharing quality allowing you to still actively take part in the meeting.

1. Check your network connection

The first thing to do to make sure you have a stable Internet connection is to restart or unplug your modem and router. If there are any pending router firmware updates, install them on your device.

In order to give Zoom access to your full bandwidth, check if there are other devices connected to your network and disable them. Additionally, to further speed up your connection, you can use an Ethernet cable which is known to be more stable and faster compared to a wireless connection.

If you can’t use a cable connection, make sure you’re not too far away from the Wi-Fi router. Ideally, the computer you’re using for Zoom video conferences should be only a few feet away from your router.

Alternatively, you can also switch to a different Wi-Fi channel and test to see if you notice any differences.

After following all these suggestions, check your connection and make sure you meet the bandwidth requirements (ideally, at least 2 Mbps up/down).

Note: Temporary infrastructure issues on your ISP’s side could also negatively impact your Internet connection. Get in touch in your ISP and check if there are any known infrastructure or server problems.

2. Disable bandwidth-hogging programs

If there are other programs running in the background, we recommend disabling them, especially if we’re talking about bandwidth-hogging software such as cloud sync programs, streaming tools, video-sharing programs, and so on.

If you’re using a VPN, disable it and check if you notice any improvements in terms of network stability. Some statistics suggest that using a VPN may slow down your connection by up to 30% or even 50% if you use a VPN server that’s not located in your region.

3. Disable SIP ALG and QOS

SIP ALG or Application Layer Gateway is a tool that many routers come equipped with. Its main role is to prevent router firewall issues. But sometimes, SIP ALG can cause more problems than it fixes, and disabling it is a wise decision.

To disable SIP ALG, follow these steps:

  1. Access your router’s admin page, and go the Advanced Tab or Advances settings.
  2. Then, select Setup and WAN setup.
  3. Locate NAT filtering, and check the option that allows you to turn off SIP ALG.
  4. Restart your router and check if Zoom still detects the connection is unstable.

These instructions may vary depending on your router model. On some routers, the SIP ALG feature can be found under firewall settings. For detailed instructions, go to your router manufacturer’s support page.

Other users suggested that turning off QoS (Quality of Service) may also help. As a quick reminder, QoS is a common router tool that prioritizes traffic.

4. Renew your IP address

Refreshing your IP address is another potential solution that may fix this Zoom unstable connection problem.

  1. Launch Command prompt with admin rights
  2. Enter the following commands and hit Enter after each one:
    • netsh winsock reset
    • netsh int ip reset
    • ipconfig /release
    • ipconfig /renew
    • ipconfig /flushdns
  3. Restart your computer and launch Zoom.

5. Change DNS settings

  1. Go to Settings > Network & Internet
  2. Click on your internet connection
  3. Scroll down to IP settings and click on the IP assignment button
  4. Select Manual and enable IPv4 or IPv6 depending on your network and hardware configuration
  5. Enter the primary and secondary DNS your want to use:
    1. Google Public DNS: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
    2. OpenDNS: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220
    3. Cloudflare DNS: 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1
  6. Apply the changes, restart your computer, and check if the error is gone.

Why does internet speed matter on Zoom?

Zoom is a video conferencing software that lets you connect with users around the world. Video conferencing requires you have a reliable internet connection in the first place. While download speed is definitely important when video conferencing, a number of people forget to check their upload speeds.

When you have lesser bandwidth available, Zoom automatically reduces the quality of the downloaded video. This is why a slow internet connection usually means a grainy Zoom video. As the bandwidth becomes available for Zoom, it automatically downloads better quality (and thus bigger size) video streams. Similarly, when you have slower uploads, you may notice that your video feed is grainy.

What about upload speed for zoom?

When you begin a meeting on Zoom, you are essentially downloading the video of the person on the other side. Simultaneously, you are uploading a live video feed of yourself to the Zoom servers. Both these functions require an internet connection and the quality of the video feeds depends on the speed of your internet.

We have discussed below the download and upload speeds for various tasks you can do on Zoom. Have a look.

Zoom Internet speed requirements

Here is a breakdown of the average internet speed required for a Zoom meeting depending on different scenarios.

For 1:1 video calling

In this case, there are two people on the Zoom call; you and the person you are calling. 1:1 Zoom calls are common but not as common as Zoom meetings with multiple participants.

HQ Video HD 720P Video1080P HD Video
Upload Speed600 kbps1.2 Mbps1.8 Mbps
Download Speed600 kbps1.2 Mbps1.8 Mbps

For group video calling

Group video calls have more than two active video streams. This is the most common format of Zoom calls.

HQ Video HD 720P Video/Gallery ViewReceiving 1080P HD VideoSending 1080P HD Video
Upload Speed800 kbps1.5Mbps2.5 Mbps3.0 Mbps
Download Speed1.0 Mbps1.5Mbps2.5 Mbps3.0 Mbps

For Screen Sharing

Zoom allows you to share your screen with other participants. This means participants can view what is on your screen in real-time. Depending on whether the other participants have their video feeds on, the requirement changes. This uses considerably less bandwidth as is shown in the table below.

Screen SharingSpeed (upload/download)
No video thumbnail50-75 kbps
With video thumbnail50-150 kbps

For audio calls

Few people use Zoom for only audio calls. Audio calls are actually the best way to connect with people if you have slow internet. The bandwidth required for VoIP (Voice over IP) is negligible when compared to video calls.

Audio CallsSpeed (upload/download)
Audio only VoIP60-80kbps
Zoom Phone60-100kbps

For Webinars

Webinars are basically virtual seminars. The Webinar add-on is required to use the function on Zoom. The following table explains the bandwidth recommendation for Webinar attendees.

Tips for a better Zoom meeting on a slow internet connection

If you notice that your Zoom calls are terrible because of a slower internet connection, here are some tips you could try to help with that.

Zoom Network & Wireless Cards Driver Download For Windows

  • Use a wired connection over Wifi: While wireless connections are much more convenient to use, they do come with their downfalls. For the best-uninterrupted internet connection connect your device to a wired internet connection directly to your modem.
  • Use WiFi over mobile data: While WiFi is not as stable as a wired connection, it is definitely more stable than using mobile data. Your mobile data depends on many factors for optimum speed. When possible connect to a WiFi connection when taking Zoom calls on your phone.
  • Turn off your webcam if you don’t need it: Video meetings take up a huge chunk of bandwidth. So if you have a slower internet connection, try turning off your webcam when you do not need it, instead of constantly keeping it on.
  • Disable HD video: If you do need to keep your camera on, you could still restrict the bandwidth of your video call by turning off HD video on the call. To do so, go to Settings in the top right corner of the app.

Now go to the ‘Video’ tab in the left side panel and uncheck ‘Enable HD’.

You can also do this while in a meeting. Simply click the little arrow beside the video button and go to ‘Video Settings’ to uncheck the option.
